Abstract

Background: Dental caries is commonly treated using tooth-colored restorative materials such as resin composites. However, composite resin restoration may discolor due to long term exposure of mouthwash. Newest herbal research introduces an extract of Kalangkala (Litsea angulata) leaves as a potential mouthwash derived from Kalimantan’s local plant. Kalangkala leaf extract has demonstrated antibacterial activity against oral bacteri. Kalangkala leaf also has a potential in reducing side effects from synthetic ingredients in conventional mouthwash. Objective: To analyze color stability of nanohybrid resin composite after immersion in 3% Kalangkala extract and non-alcoholic mouthwash. Materials and Methods: This experimental study used a post-test and control group design using 30 samples of resin composite using ISO 4049(2000) standardization. Group 1 was immersed in kalangkala extract, group 2 immersed in non-alcohol mouthwash, and group 3 in distilled water for 31 hours. The picture was taken with a high-resolution digital camera and lightning device for brightness standardization. Color changes were measured using MATLAB software with CIELAB color system. Data were analyzed statistically using ANOVA. Results: Although the Kalangkala extract group showed the highest mean color change, no statistically significant difference were found among the three immersion solutions (p=0.971). Conclusion: The Immersion in kalangkala leaf extract did not significantly affect the color change of nanohybrid resin composite.
