Abstract

This study examines the effect of Instagram social media usage intensity and self-disclosure on the effectiveness of interpersonal communication among Gunadarma University students. The study used a quantitative approach within a positivist paradigm and was based on Uses and Effects Theory. The population consisted of 19,712 students, while 392 active Instagram users aged 18–25 years who had used Instagram for at least one year were selected through purposive sampling using the Yamane formula. Data were collected through a five-point Likert questionnaire and analyzed using validity and reliability tests, classical assumption tests, and multiple linear regression with SPSS. The results show that Instagram usage intensity has a positive and significant effect on interpersonal communication effectiveness, with a t value of 7.195 and significance of 0.000. Self-disclosure also has a positive and significant effect, with a t value of 8.551 and significance of 0.000. Simultaneously, both independent variables significantly affect interpersonal communication effectiveness, with F = 137.222 and significance of 0.000. The coefficient of determination is 0.414, indicating that the two variables explain 41.4% of the variance in interpersonal communication effectiveness. The findings highlight that intensive Instagram use accompanied by healthy self-disclosure can support more effective interpersonal communication among students.
