Abstract

The batik industry in Pekalongan is a major source of livelihood, yet occupational safety and health (OSH) practices among home-based craftsmen remain poorly documented and inconsistently applied. This community service program targeted Batik Pesisir Pekalongan, a homebased batik enterprise whose workers are exposed to synthetic dye chemicals, hot wax, poor ergonomic postures, and inconsistent use of personal protective equipment (PPE) during the waxing, dyeing, and wax-removal stages. Using the Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, and Risk Control (HIRARC) method, the team first mapped workplace hazards and risk levels across the production line, then delivered an interactive socialization session combining lectures, group discussion, and hands-on PPE demonstration to 22 participant. Program success was measured with a five-point satisfaction questionnaire administered after the activity. Results showed that all five evaluated aspects, relevance to program objectives, suitability to community needs, adequacy of implementation time, team responsiveness, and community reception, received predominantly positive ratings (Strongly Agree/Agree), with the lowest-rated aspect still receiving no negative response. These findings indicate that HIRARC-based socialization is well received and considered relevant by batik craftsmen, and that the resulting hazard documentation can serve as a foundation for an internal OSH standard operating procedure.
