Abstract

This study aims to analyze forms of sexist language in the novel Manjali by Ayu Utami using Sara Mills’ critical discourse analysis (CDA) model. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected by reading, note-taking, and classifying utterances and narratives that represent sexist language. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results indicate the presence of two forms of sexist language: overt and covert sexism. Overt sexism is characterized by the use of language that demeans and objectifies women, whereas covert sexism is represented through metaphors and narratives that position women as inferior. In addition, the female protagonist’s resistance to patriarchal constructs is observed. These findings demonstrate that the language in the novel represents gender ideology and power relations
