Abstract

The development of multi-story buildings requires structural systems capable of providing adequate strength, stiffness, stability, and spatial efficiency. One alternative is the use of flat columns as a substitute for conventional columns. This study aims to analyze the effect of flat columns on the structural performance of the Poltekkes Mataram Building through a structural redesign approach. The research employed a quantitative method using ETABS software to model and analyze two structural models: the existing structure with conventional columns and the redesigned structure with flat columns. Both models were designed with identical geometry, material properties, structural dimensions, and loading conditions. The evaluated parameters included axial force, column bending moment, beam internal forces, seismic base shear, and interstory drift. The results indicate that the use of flat columns increases the axial load capacity of columns, reduces column bending moments, and alters the distribution of internal forces in beams. In addition, the redesigned structure exhibits lower effective seismic weight and seismic base shear than the existing structure. The interstory drift values of both models satisfy the allowable limits, while the redesigned structure demonstrates smaller drift values. These findings indicate that flat columns can serve as a feasible alternative for improving structural efficiency while maintaining structural performance and safety against gravity and seismic loads.
