Abstract

Low Birth Weight (LBW) is a neonatal health issue influenced by maternal conditions during pregnancy. Maternal hemoglobin levels and nutritional status play a crucial role in supporting fetal growth and development, including birth weight. This study aims to determine the relationship between maternal hemoglobin levels, nutritional status based on Body Mass Index (BMI), and the incidence of LBW at Santosa Hospital Bandung Kopo for the period of July–December 2025. This study utilized an analytical observational design with a retrospective cross-sectional approach. A sample of 100 respondents was selected using consecutive sampling. Data were retrieved from medical records, including maternal hemoglobin levels, maternal BMI, and birth weight. Data analysis was conducted using univariate and bivariate methods with the Chi-Square test. A total of 40% of infants experienced LBW, while 42% of mothers had anemia and 58% were non-anemic. The Chi-Square test revealed a significant relationship between maternal hemoglobin levels and the incidence of LBW (p-value = 0.001). Anemic mothers were 4.216 times more likely to deliver LBW infants compared to non-anemic mothers (OR = 4.216; 95% CI: 1.799–9.878). Meanwhile, no significant relationship was found between maternal nutritional status based on BMI and the incidence of LBW (p = 0.467). Maternal hemoglobin levels are significantly associated with the incidence of LBW, whereas maternal nutritional status based on BMI shows no significant association. Monitoring maternal hemoglobin levels and nutritional status during pregnancy remains essential as part of efforts to prevent LBW.
