Abstract

Speaking is often regarded as one of the most challenging skills for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners in Indonesia due to limited exposure, lack of authentic oral communication opportunities, anxiety, and low self-confidence. This study aims to determine whether Asian Parliamentary Debate (APD) activitiesas extracurricular can significantly improve students' speaking skills at SMAN 1 Lubuk Sikaping. A quantitative pre-experimental One Group Pre-test and Post-test Design was employed involving 31 students of the 2025/2026 English Debate extracurricular program. The treatment consisted of four structured APD sessions conducted in Weeks 2–5, preceded by a pre-test in Week 1 and followed by a post-test in Week 6. Speaking performance was measured using Hughes's (2003) rubric covering five components: grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension. A paired sample t-test revealed a statistically significant improvement in overall speaking scores (pre-test M = 52.26, post-test M = 74.00, t = −14.775, p = 0.000) and across all five components. These findings confirm that Asian Parliamentary Debate is an effective instructional strategy for enhancing EFL students' speaking skills and can serve as an alternative approach in speaking instruction.
