Abstract

The eruptions of Mount Sinabung since 2013 have had a significant impact on the mental health of children as a vulnerable group. However, research on the psychological impact within evacuation camps remains limited. This study aims to identify the mental health status of children following the eruption and formulate recommendations for adaptive interventions. The method used Is descriptive qualitative research with a post-positivist approach. The study subjects consisted of 3 parents and 4 adolescents in evacuation camps who were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The results indicate that children’s mental health is characterized by chronic grief over loss, a crisis of privacy, impaired cognitive functioning, and the phenomenon of parentification, in which adolescents are forced to assume the family’s financial responsibilities. Nevertheless, strong family resilience was observed through parental affection and spiritual-communal coping mechanisms. This study concludes that trauma recovery for children in refugee camps requires a holistic approach that includes the restoration of social roles and the provision of personal space.
