Abstract

This study aims to analyze errors in the articulation points (makharijul huruf) when reading the Qur’an among students at Madrasah Pertubuhan Kebajikan Al-Muhibbin, Melaka, Malaysia, particularly in relation to their native language accents. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through observation of students’ Qur’anic reading activities, interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that students’ native accents influence their ability to pronounce several Arabic letters correctly. The errors mainly occur in distinguishing and articulating letters that have similar points of articulation, particularly letters requiring precise positioning of the tongue, lips, and throat. Differences in linguistic backgrounds contribute to difficulties in producing Arabic phonemes that are not present or are differently pronounced in students’ native languages. These findings indicate that learning Qur’anic reading requires focused instruction on makharijul huruf, repeated pronunciation practice, teacher correction, and attention to students’ linguistic backgrounds. Therefore, understanding the influence of native accents is important for developing more effective Qur’anic reading instruction and improving students’ accuracy in pronouncing Arabic letters.
