Abstract

IBackground: HIV is still a national and international health concern, with an annual increase in cases, but treatment adherence is still poor. Strong family support is essential for people living with HIV who are receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART), but stigma frequently prevents them from getting it. The purpose of this study is to examine the connection between patient adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) and family support (emotional, informational, instrumental, and appraisal)Method: 84 HIV patients who were chosen by chance were included in a cross-sectional quantitative study design. Relationships between variables were evaluated using the Chi-Square test. Result: The majority of patients who did not follow their treatment plan received inadequate emotional support (59.1%) and inadequate informational support (60.0%). Inadequate instrumental support (42.5%) and insufficient appraisal support (43.5%) were also experienced by nearly half of the non-adherent patients. Significant associations were found between ART adherence and living with family (p=0.046), emotional support (p=0.001), informational support (p=0.000), instrumental support (p=0.028), and appraisal support (p=0.005). Conclusion: Overall, family support is crucial in strengthening patients’ motivation and treatment adherence. Feeling valued and supported encourages patients to remain committed to their therapy.
