Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of the relational and communicative dynamics between fathers and their children in shaping character amidst the challenges of modernity faced by Generation Z a context where such relationships often contend with emotional distance and limited verbal communication. The study aims to analyze father-child relationship patterns, describe how university students interpret these relationships, and identify the character values cultivated in Generation Z students at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Economics, Universitas Hamzanwadi. A descriptive qualitative approach within an interpretive paradigm was employed, utilizing in-depth interviews with 20 informants; data were analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña interactive model and examined through the lenses of Family Communication Patterns Theory and Herbert Blumer’s Symbolic Interactionism Theory. The findings reveal that father-child relationship patterns fall into two categories: close and limited; students interpret limited verbal communication and their fathers' physical hard work as symbols of affection (action-oriented meaning) and catalysts for independence; and these dynamics contribute significantly to shaping five key character values in the students: independence, responsibility, discipline, self-confidence, and self-control.
