Abstract

This study investigates the prevalence and significance of structural metaphors in the 5 Seconds of Summer album. Given the inherent challenges listeners face in interpreting such metaphors, the research employs a qualitative approach to analyze 19 songs from the "5SOS5" album. Utilizing Lakoff's conceptual theory of metaphor, the study identifies and examines instances of structural metaphors within the song lyrics. The findings reveal a total of 65 occurrences of structural metaphors, primarily themed around love and life relationships. This research sheds light on the pervasive presence of structural metaphors in pop genre lyrics, emphasizing their role in conveying complex concepts through accessible language. By highlighting the prevalence and themes of structural metaphors in song lyrics, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the linguistic and conceptual nuances embedded within musical compositions.
