Abstract

This article aims to narrate Surah Al-Kahf through the perspective of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Al-Jailani using William James' theory of mysticism (1902). Many arguments explain that the historical aspects in the Qur'an are only symbolic and some consider them fictional. Through a Sufi exegesis, it takes a deep effort to see the extent to which historical arguments are included in the interpretation. Using a character-based qualitative research method, this article examines the life, thoughts, contributions, and interpretation of the Qur'an by Sheikh Abdul Qadir Al-Jailani by analyzing Surah Al-Kahfi. The findings show that the stories of the Companions of the Cave (Ashab al-Kahf), Satan's refusal to prostrate to Prophet Adam, Prophet Khidr and Prophet Musa, Dhu al-Qarnayn, and Gog and Magog (Ya'juj and Ma'juj) contain mystical elements that are in line with the characteristics of mysticism according to James. Four main characteristics, namey ineffability, noetic quality, immortality, and passivity, are clearly reflected in Al-Jailani's interpretation and tadabbur iqrar (spiritual advice). These results show that Al-Jailani's interpretation of Surah Al-Kahf not only highlights historical aspects but also reveals the spiritual depth and inner meaning of each event.
