Abstract

This study was motivated by the weakening of communal practices and social solidarity among elementary school students, a condition influenced by rising individualism and rapid technological change in the 21st century. Character education in Indonesia places gotong royong (mutual cooperation) as one of the core dimensions of the Pancasila Student Profile, yet this value increasingly needs contextual reinforcement outside the classroom. This study aims to: (1) describe the forms of coastal community local wisdom that contain the value of gotong royong, (2) analyze the practice of gotong royong carried out by elementary school students in the school and coastal community environment, and (3) analyze the process of instilling gotong royong values rooted in coastal community local wisdom in shaping students' social solidarity. This study used a qualitative approach with a descriptive-exploratory case study design, conducted at SDN Mayangan 4, Probolinggo City, a coastal-area school. Research informants consisted of the school principal, a fifth-grade teacher, students, parents, and education staff, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, and analyzed thematically through coding, categorization, and theme interpretation. Data validity was established through source triangulation, technique triangulation, member checking, and persistent observation. The results show that: (1) coastal community local wisdom related to gotong royong is reflected in communal clean-up activities, cooperative fishing-boat repair, coastal environmental clean-ups, and other collective social traditions passed down across generations; (2) students practice gotong royong through class picket duty, group work, helping classmates who face difficulties, and participation in community social activities; and (3) the internalization of gotong royong values occurs through consistent habituation, modeling by teachers and parents, direct social experience, and the school's integration of local culture into character education, which together foster students' cooperation, empathy, collective responsibility, and social solidarity.
