Abstract

This study aims to examine the implementation of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) based on the local wisdom of handwoven sarongs produced using non-mechanical looms (Alat Tenun Bukan Mesin/ATBM) in strengthening the character of elementary school students in Taman District, Pemalang Regency, during the academic year 2025/2026. The integration of local cultural values into SEL is expected to foster students’ social awareness, emotional regulation, responsibility, and respect for cultural heritage. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach with data collected through observations, interviews, and documentation involving students, teachers, and local weaving artisans. The learning activities were designed by incorporating values embedded in the ATBM weaving process, such as patience, cooperation, perseverance, and discipline, into classroom and co-curricular learning. The findings indicate that SEL based on local wisdom effectively enhances students’ character development, particularly in terms of self-awareness, social skills, empathy, and positive behavior. Moreover, students demonstrated increased appreciation for local culture and a stronger sense of identity. The study concludes that integrating SEL with local wisdom-based learning not only supports character education but also contributes to the preservation of cultural heritage in elementary education. Therefore, this approach can be considered an innovative and contextually relevant strategy for strengthening students’ character in primary schools.
