Abstract

 In this study, the effects of a multipurpose microbial inoculant on the chemical composition, physical quality, fermentation characteristics, and in vitro ruminal digestibility of sorghum silage-based fermented complete feed were evaluated. Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) was harvested at 90 days of age and subsequently formulated with soybean meal, distilled dried grains with solubles (DDGS), tapioca dregs (onggok), and pollard and then ensiled for six months. These mixtures were treated with sterile distilled water (CON) and commercial multipurpose microbial inoculant (SBP®) (TRT) and then ensiled into 5 kg of mini silo in quadruplicate for 14 days. After ensiling, the chemical composition, physical quality, fermentation profile, and in vitro ruminal digestibility of the silage were evaluated. Rumen fluid was collected from two rumen-cannulated Bali cattle for digestibility analysis. The data were analysed using an independent sample t-test. The dry matter (DM) (P<0.05) and crude protein (CP) concentration (P<0.05) decreased in the INO treatment group. Compared with those in the CON group, the fermentation characteristics in the TRT group improved, as indicated by a lower pH (P<0.05) and a higher lactic acid concentration (P<0.05). The TRT treatment also resulted in greater in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) and organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) (P<0.05). However, organic matter (OM), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), and acid detergent fibre (ADF) were not affected by inoculant supplementation (P>0.05). In conclusion, supplementation with multipurpose microbes improved the fermentation characteristics and in vitro ruminal digestibility of sorghum silage-based fermented complete feed but had limited effects on the fibre fractions and organic matter content.
