Abstract

Although studies on endangered oral traditions have increased, most focus on documentation rather than developing evidence-based revitalisation frameworks. Consequently, the Simalungun taur-taur tradition remains underexplored from an anthropolinguistic perspective despite its rapid intergenerational decline. This study aims to examine the anthropolinguistic characteristics of taur-taur, identify factors contributing to its decline, and develop the Integrated Taur-Taur Revitalisation Model (ITRM). Using a qualitative ethnographic design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participant observation, document analysis, and audiovisual recordings involving 18 purposively selected participants from four sub-districts of Simalungun Regency. Reflexive thematic analysis revealed four performative sub-genres and six interrelated sociolinguistic factors accelerating language endangerment across ideological, demographic, and institutional domains. Acoustic analysis of representative recordings from each sub-genre further revealed distinct prosodic profiles, with final-syllable duration ranging from 421 ms in parsaoran to 534 ms in panurirang, reflecting its lamentative function and confirming taur-taur's distinctive prosodic register. Based on these findings, this study proposes the Integrated Taur-Taur Revitalisation Model (ITRM) integrating digital documentation, master–apprentice transmission, educational integration, and community-based revitalisation. The model contributes a context-specific anthropolinguistic framework that supports sustainable preservation of endangered oral traditions and informs language policy, cultural education, and community empowerment
