Abstract

Contemporary consumer culture has shaped a lifestyle that positions consumption and material possession as sources of meaning and happiness, thereby blurring the distinction between needs and wants and precipitating a spiritual and ethical crisis. Modernity has brought about fundamental changes in how people derive meaning from life, particularly regarding the understanding of pleasure and life's purpose. Addressing this issue, this paper examines the concept of shukr (gratitude) within the Sufi teachings of Sheikh Abd al-Shamad al-Palimbani, offering it as a spiritual critique of contemporary consumer culture. The study employs a qualitative approach based on a literature review, analyzing al-Palimbani’s seminal works—specifically Hidayat al-Salikin and Siyar al-Salikin—through content analysis and contextual reading. The findings reveal that, in al-Palimbani’s Sufism, gratitude is not merely a verbal expression but encompasses inner awareness, verbal acknowledgment, and the ethical utilization of blessings in a spirit of obedience. Within this framework, gratitude is positioned as a spiritual-ethical category in Nusantara Sufism that critically challenges the logic of consumer culture, fosters an attitude of qana‘ah (contentment), and reconfigures the human relationship with the material world. This underscores the enduring relevance of Sufism as an ethical and spiritual framework for addressing contemporary challenges.
