Abstract

The degradation of coral reef ecosystems requires rehabilitation efforts to support ecosystem recovery. One method of coral reef rehabilitation is through coral planula recruitment. Crustose Coralline Algae (CCA) that grow and attach to substrates serve as settlement sites for coral larvae, thereby supporting the recruitment process. This study aimed to determine the growth ability of CCA on concrete slab substrates with different compositions of constituent materials. The substrates used were concrete slabs made from different material mixtures. The differences in mixture composition were tested to determine the most suitable mixture for supporting CCA growth. The data collected included water quality parameters and the presence of CCA attached to the concrete slab substrates. The results showed that the 1:1 mixture produced concrete slabs with better physical conditions compared to the 3:1 mixture. Water quality parameters during the study were within ranges that supported marine organism growth, with salinity values of 36–39‰ and pH values of 7–8. Visual observations indicated that CCA was able to grow and attach to the constructed concrete slab substrates.
