Abstract

Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) are common occupational health problems experienced by workers due to non-ergonomic working postures. Workers in household tofu production industries perform various manual activities, such as lifting soybean sacks, carrying water-filled buckets, pouring soybeans into grinding machines, and working in prolonged bending and standing positions. These activities may increase the risk of MSD complaints and affect workers’ health and productivity. This study aimed to determine the relationship between working posture and Musculoskeletal Disorder (MSD) complaints among workers in household tofu production industries in Kleak and Batu Kota Villages, Malalayang District, Manado City. This study used an observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 34 workers selected using total sampling. Working posture was assessed using the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) method, while MSD complaints were measured using the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ). Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses with the Chi-Square test. The results showed that all respondents were male, with the majority aged 17–25 years. Most workers had high to very high working posture risk based on the REBA assessment. Based on the NMQ, most workers experienced severe MSD complaints, particularly in the right wrist, right shoulder, and lower back. Activities most frequently associated with complaints included transporting soybeans and lifting buckets or basins of water. The Chi-Square test showed a significant relationship between working posture and MSD complaints. It can be concluded that non-ergonomic working postures are associated with increased MSD complaints. Ergonomic improvements, appropriate work aids, facility adjustments, and ergonomic education are needed to reduce the risk of MSDs among workers.
