Abstract

Mobile phones were an important part of daily life. Several experimental studies have shown that exposure to electromagnetic radiation may contribute to intracellular calcium dysregulation and oxidative stress. However, the underlying mechanism remains incompletely understood and requires further investigation. Previous research has reported that rats exposed to electromagnetic radiation exhibit elevated serum creatinine levels, suggesting potential renal dysfunction, particularly during pregnancy, when physiological changes in renal function occur. Natural compounds with antioxidant and calcium channel-regulating effects can offer protective benefits against that damage. This study aimed to assess the effect of cactus (Opuntia cochenillifera) on serum creatinine levels and renal tubular injury in pregnant mice (Mus musculus) exposed to electromagnetic radiation from mobile phones. Eighteen pregnant mice were randomly assigned to three groups in a true experimental design. A treatment group (P) receiving both electromagnetic radiation exposure and dried cactus powder, a negative control group (K−) exposed only to electromagnetic radiation, and a healthy control group (Ks) not exposed to electromagnetic radiation. Serum creatinine levels and renal histopathological changes were evaluated on day 19. The data were collected and analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk test, followed by the Kruskal–Wallis test and the Mann–Whitney U test. The results show that the treatment group had significantly lower serum creatinine levels compared with both control groups. The treatment group also showed less renal tubular injury than the control group, although this difference was not statistically significant. These findings indicate that O. cochenillifera can help reduce kidney damage from electromagnetic radiation exposure.
