Abstract

The growing need to strengthen students’ ecological literacy calls for learning approaches that connect environmental knowledge with meaningful reflection and action. Although environmental education has been implemented in Adiwiyata schools, conventional learning media often provide limited audiovisual and contextual experiences for engaging students with complex ecological issues. This study aimed to develop and evaluate GEO-EVOTIC (Ecopedagogy-Based Cinematic Geography Video) as an innovative geography learning medium for strengthening students’ ecological literacy. A Research and Development (R&D) design based on the ADDIE model was employed, incorporating a Six-Stage Story Structure to develop the cinematic video. The study involved 99 Grade 11 students from three Adiwiyata senior high schools in Pati Regency, Indonesia. Data were collected through observations, interviews, expert validation, questionnaires, and pretest-posttest assessments and analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired-sample tests, the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, and rank-biserial correlation. Expert evaluations indicated that GEO-EVOTIC was highly feasible, with media and material validation scores of 85.25% and 95.20%, respectively. The intervention produced significant improvements at SMA 2 and SMA 3, with large and very large effect sizes, respectively, whereas the effect at SMA 1 was small and non-significant. These findings suggest that ecopedagogy-based cinematic media can strengthen ecological literacy when supported by appropriate contextual and instructional conditions.
