Abstract

This study examines the transformation of the Sedekah Desa tradition as a form of local wisdom maintained and adapted by Javanese transmigrant communities in Girimulya District, North Bengkulu Regency. Sedekah Desa is a Javanese cultural heritage that originally functioned as a ritual expression of gratitude to God for agricultural yields and village safety. In the context of community relocation through the transmigration program, this tradition has undergone transformation in terms of form, meaning, and social function as a response to an environment different from the homeland. This study employs a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach, utilizing participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentary study. The findings indicate that the Sedekah Desa tradition in Girimulya District has undergone changes in ritual processions and symbolism, yet core values such as mutual cooperation (gotong royong), gratitude, and social solidarity remain preserved. The transformation is adaptive and accommodative to the ecological, social, and cultural conditions in North Bengkulu. The tradition also serves as a cultural identity anchor for Javanese communities in diaspora and as a bridge for integration between transmigrant and local communities. This research contributes to understanding the dynamics of local wisdom in the context of population mobility and cultural acculturation in Indonesia.
