Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the types of translation shifts used in The Midnight Library novel from English to Indonesian, as well as to identify the translation changes processes from source language to target language in The Midnight Library novel. The data were acquired from the English version of Matt Haig's novel The Midnight Library and the Indonesian version of Perpustakaan Tengah Malam by Dharmawati. It was gathered while reading and using the note-taking method. The entire set of data was then analysed using qualitative method and supported by simple random sampling method. Translation shifts theory by Catford (1965) is applied in this study. There were 62 data of level shifts from grammar to lexis detected, which were grouped into 7 types of grammatical forms. Then there were 12 data points of structure shifts (category shifts) in passive voice to active voice. 44 class shifts (category shifts) data focused on word classes and classed as verb into noun and vice versa, verb into adjective and vice versa, adverb into verb, adverb into adjective and vice versa, adjective into noun, adverb into noun, and preposition into verb. Noun into noun phrase and vice versa, adjective into adjective phrase and vice versa, verb into verb phrase and vice versa, and sentence into adjective phrase comprise the 57 data of unit shifts (category shifts). 42 intra-system shifts (category shifts) from plural to singular form data. The data analysis revealed that there are modifications of various sorts of shifts between the source language and target language. Keywords: Translation, Shifts, Novel
