Abstract

This article aims to analyze the concepts, objectives, and stages of the counseling process from the perspective of professional guidance and counseling services. This study employed a literature review method with a qualitative descriptive approach by analyzing relevant scientific sources concerning the counseling process and therapeutic relationships. The findings indicate that the counseling process consists of three interrelated stages: the initial stage, the middle or working stage, and the final or action stage. The initial stage plays an important role in establishing rapport, clarifying clients’ problems, and developing a counseling contract. The middle stage focuses on in-depth problem exploration, reassessment of the client’s condition, and development of alternative solutions. The final stage emphasizes strengthening behavioral changes, reducing anxiety, increasing client independence, and developing follow-up plans. The review also demonstrates that the effectiveness of each stage is strongly influenced by the quality of the therapeutic relationship, particularly through empathy, unconditional acceptance, genuineness, and counselors’ communication skills. Therefore, systematic counseling practices grounded in professional competence are essential for facilitating optimal client change and development.
