Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disease with a continuously increasing global prevalence that requires comprehensive community-based management. Community health volunteers (kader kesehatan) play a strategic role in DM education and early detection at the community level; however, their competencies remain suboptimal owing to limited refreshment activities. This community service activity aimed to enhance volunteers' knowledge of DM concepts and diet management, as well as their practical skills in diabetic foot exercises. The method employed was direct mentoring through a structured volunteer refresher (refreshing kader) activity in Kujangsari Village, covering DM concepts, diet management based on the 3J principle (jumlah/amount, jenis/type, jadwal/schedule), and diabetic foot exercise training for 30 health volunteer participants, supplemented by indirect mentoring via the PRO-DM Application. Results showed an increase in DM concept knowledge by 6.6% (from 77.7% to 84.3%) and diet management knowledge by 4.7% (from 86.0% to 90.7%). The ability to perform diabetic foot exercises improved from 84.0% to 94.0% based on a standardised checklist assessment. The novelty of this community service programme lies in the integration of direct mentoring with digital support through the PRO-DM Application to strengthen the sustainability of community-based diabetes education. These improvements underscore the importance of continuous volunteer development by primary health centre (puskesmas) workers to optimise the role of health volunteers in community-based DM management. Ongoing refreshment training supported by innovative educational tools such as the PRO-DM Application is strongly recommended.
