Abstract

The division of roles between husbands and wives within a family is an important indicator of equitable gender relations and household well-being. However, these patterns of role division may vary depending on a family’s socioeconomic conditions, including between families participating in the Family Hope Program (PKH) and dual-income families. This study aims to examine and compare patterns of cooperation and the division of roles between husbands and wives in the public and domestic spheres within these two types of families. The study employs a qualitative field research method and analyzes data based on the theory of sociology of law. The results show that in PKH families, the division of roles remains highly traditional, husbands dominate the public sphere, while wives bear nearly all domestic responsibilities. Conversely, in career families, cooperation in the public sphere is more reciprocal and based on mutual agreement. However, in the domestic sphere, traditional views still exert a strong influence, so the burden of household chores continues to fall primarily on the wife, with the husband’s contribution remaining minimal. These findings indicate that changes in gender roles in the public sphere have not yet been fully accompanied by a transformation in the domestic sphere.
