Abstract

Objective: This study aims to analyze the function of law as an instrument of social control from the perspective of sociology of law through a library research approach. The study seeks to explain how legal norms interact with social values, institutions, and patterns of community behavior in maintaining social order while responding to social changes. In addition, this research identifies the dynamics of legal effectiveness in achieving justice and social stability amid the rapid transformation of modern society. Methods: This research employed a qualitative approach using library research. Data were collected from scientific journal articles, academic books, legislation, and previous studies discussing sociology of law, social control, legal compliance, and community behavior. Data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative analysis through stages of data reduction, categorization, interpretation, and synthesis to identify major themes. Results: The findings indicate that law serves not only as a coercive mechanism but also as a social institution that embodies collective values and regulates interactions among individuals and groups. The effectiveness of law depends on public legal awareness, institutional legitimacy, legal culture, and consistency of law enforcement. The study further demonstrates that legal compliance emerges from a combination of normative acceptance, social legitimacy, and public trust rather than sanctions alone.
