Abstract

The Massulapa' To Mate tradition, practiced in Polewali Mandar, West Sulawesi, Indonesia, constitutes a functional reception of the Qur'an and Hadith, enacted through the recitation of specific verses during the lowering of the deceased into the grave. This study aims to explore the functional reception of the Quran and Hadith texts within the Massulapa' To Mate tradition among Mandar people, which is hypothesized to serve a dual function: a religious-ritualistic role and an educational-practical one. The research method used in this study is a qualitative method through observation and interviews with religious leaders, mosque administrators, and the general public. First, the findings of this study indicate that the Massulapa' To Mate tradition originated from interpretive efforts on Hadith texts narrated by Abdullah bin Umar and Ibn Abbas, which were contextualized by highlighting their functional dimensions in alignment with the cultural constructs and social position of the Mandar community. Second, in addition to serving as a death rite, this tradition fulfils an educational function, which can be broadly categorized into three areas: Quranic literacy education, character education, and the instilling of values of moderation amid diversity. These findings show how the mystical magical dimension of the verses of the Quran transcends its function as an educational resource that is deeply rooted in the Polewali Mandar community.
