Abstract

Pulp and paper industry generates solid waste around 3-4% of the total production, mostly form in sludge from the Waste Water Treatment Plant. Sludge gasification is one such technology processing sludge into syngas. The purpose of this research was to study the factors that influence the pulp and paper industry sludge gasification into syngas. This research was conducted by simulating the sludge process gasification in the fluidized bed gasifier using Aspen Plus v8.0 software. Configuration process is set out in this study is a fluidized bed gasification systems to feed sludge using O2 and steam as gasification agent. Some stages considered in the ASPEN Plus simulation to show the entire process of gasification, ie the decomposition of sludge, combustion of volatile substances, char gasification and gas-solids separation. In this simulation used sludge with ultimate value (dry basis): 48.0% C; 5.7% H; 36.3% O; 0.8% S; 1.2% N; and proximate (dry basis): water content of 40.90%; ash of 8.70%; Volatile Matter 52.1%; Fixed Carbon 41.82%; LHV 9.5 MJ / kg. Variable research: reactor temperature 600-800oC, ER 0.20 to 0.35 kg/kg, S/B 0.20-0.35 kg/kg and fixed variable operating pressure of 1 atm, sludge flow rate of 100 kg/min. The reactor temperature, Equivalent Ratio (ER), Steam/Sludge ratio (S/S) are factors that are very influential in the sludge gasification process. Increased temperatures cause the concentration of hydrogen in the syngas increased considerably (from 24.84 to 35.19%) and reduces the conversion of CO (17.07 to 15.45%). Increased ER reduces the conversion of syngas -15.85% and increase the percentage of CO2 (26.40-35.99%), ER optimum between 0.2-0.3. High steam-sludge ratio can reduce the temperature of reactor which have an effect on the rate of gasification, S/B optimum between 0.20-0.25.
