Abstract

Critical thinking is an essential competency that should be developed through Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) instruction in elementary schools. This study examined the effect of the Predict-Observe-Explain (POE) model on fourth-grade students’ critical thinking skills in learning cultural diversity and local wisdom at SD Muhammadiyah Sawangan. A quantitative approach was employed using a quasi-experimental method with a nonequivalent control group design. The sample comprised 39 students selected through saturated sampling, including 19 students in the experimental group and 20 students in the control group. The instrument was a multiple-choice test developed to assess elementary clarification, basic support, and inference. Of the ten initial items, six were retained after validity, reliability, difficulty, and discrimination analyses. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Mann-Whitney U test with IBM SPSS Statistics 31. The experimental group obtained a mean posttest score of 90.16, while the control group obtained 60.55. The Mann-Whitney U test produced p < .001, indicating a significant difference in critical thinking skills between the two groups. The POE model encouraged students to formulate predictions, observe evidence, compare observations with their initial ideas, and construct fact-based explanations. The findings suggest that POE has the potential to support active, contextual, and student-centered IPAS instruction.
