Abstract

Medicinal plants passed down through generations represent a valuable cultural asset that warrants documentation. Kembang Tanjong District in Pidie Regency is one area where plants continue to be used as alternative medicine. This study aimed to document the types of medicinal plants used, the methods of their application, and community perceptions regarding their use compared to modern medicine. A qualitative approach employing purposive sampling was used, with data collected through semi-structured interviews, field observations, and the sampling of medicinal plants in Kembang Tanjong District, Pidie Regency. The results indicate that the community in Kembang Tanjong District utilizes 53 medicinal plant species from 31 families for traditional healing, with leaves being the most frequently used plant part (45%). The predominant methods of administration were oral ingestion (66%), topical application (28%), poulticing (3%), washing (3%), instillation (1%), and chewing (1%). Medicinal plants are frequently used for minor ailments due to their accessibility, affordability, safety, and alignment with tradition, whereas modern medicines are used for more serious conditions, reflecting a balance between local wisdom and formal healthcare services.
