Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the causes of injection fuel pump damage and the efforts taken to overcome it. The research method used was descriptive qualitative, with data collection techniques including field observation, interviews, and documentation study during sea practice on board. The collected data were analyzed to identify the main factors causing the damage. The results showed that the damage to the injection fuel pump was caused by dirty fuel oil (FO). Impurities carried by the fuel entered the pump components, causing wear and disturbing the pump’s performance. This condition resulted in abnormal fuel pressure and affected the combustion process in the main engine. This study focused only on injection fuel pump damage without involving the injector, because the injector was not damaged. The corrective actions taken included cleaning the fuel lines, inspecting the condition of injection fuel pump components, replacing worn parts, cleaning the daily tank and discontinuing its use, as well as increasing supervision of fuel cleanliness. With proper maintenance and fuel quality control, damage to the injection fuel pump can be minimized so that the main engine performance can return to normal.
