Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder caused by problems in insulin production, leading to impaired blood glucose regulation. Diabetic neuropathy, a microvascular complication, results in loss of sensation in the feet, causing unnoticed small repeated wounds known as diabetic foot. Lack of information about diabetic foot complications leads to low knowledge about the importance of foot care among diabetes mellitus patients. Low knowledge has six times greater risk of developing diabetic foot because it can influence foot care behavior. This study aimed to describe the knowledge of diabetic patients about foot care in Type II diabetes mellitus patients in the Puskesmas Sekaran area. This research used a descriptive study design to describe the knowledge of diabetics about diabetic foot care. Respondents in this study were 35 people selected using accidental sampling technique. The data analysis used was univariate analysis. Results showed that the level of knowledge of diabetics in the Puskesmas Sekaran area about foot care was still lacking; of 35 respondents, those with good knowledge were 17.15%, sufficient 22.85%, and lacking 60%. In conclusion, knowledge of the elderly about the importance of foot care in diabetes mellitus patients needs to be improved through in-depth education about the importance of foot care for diabetics to prevent the occurrence of diabetic foot ulcers.
