Abstract

Abstract. Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) remain a common issue in the garment industry due to non-ergonomic working postures during production activities. One such condition was identified at CV. Buana Ar-Rahni, where fabric cutting is performed on the floor in squatting or kneeling positions with prolonged trunk bending. This working posture increases the risk of musculoskeletal disorders and contributes to the company's inability to consistently achieve its daily cutting target. This study aims to design an ergonomic fabric cutting workstation to reduce ergonomic risks for cutting operators. The research methods included observation, interviews, the Nordic Body Map (NBM) questionnaire, ergonomic risk assessment using the Workplace Ergonomic Risk Assessment (WERA) method, anthropometric measurements of 23 operators, and design simulation using CATIA V5. The initial WERA assessment produced final scores ranging from 37 to 43, indicating a Medium Risk level. Based on these findings, an ergonomic fabric cutting table equipped with telescopic legs, a fabric roll support, a bearing system, and fabric hooks was designed. Simulation results demonstrated improved working posture, with WERA scores decreasing to 22–29, corresponding to a Low Risk level. The proposed workstation is expected to reduce ergonomic risks while improving the efficiency of the fabric cutting process and supporting the achievement of the company's daily production targets Abstrak.

Abstract

Abstract. The garment industry involves repetitive work activities and long working hours that increase the risk of Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) when workstations are not ergonomically designed. At the sewing workstation of PT Aqila Berkah Jaya, the production target of 150 pieces/day has not been achieved, with actual output averaging only 120 pieces/day. This condition is associated with musculoskeletal complaints that force operators to take frequent rest breaks, highlighting the need for ergonomic workstation improvements to enhance occupational safety and productivity. This study aimed to identify musculoskeletal complaints, evaluate working posture risks, and design an ergonomic workstation. Musculoskeletal complaints were assessed using the Nordic Body Map (NBM) questionnaire, while working posture risks were evaluated using the Loading on the Upper Body Assessment (LUBA) method involving six sewing operators. Anthropometric data from 31 operators were used to develop the workstation design, which was validated through CATIA simulation. The results showed that the most frequent complaints occurred in the neck, shoulders, upper back, and lower back. LUBA assessment indicated that material retrieval, sewing, and finished-product storage tasks were classified as moderate to high risk. The proposed ergonomic workstation reduced all task risk levels to Category II, demonstrating its potential to minimize MSD risks, improve operator comfort, and enhance productivity. Rancangan fasilitas kerja mampu menurunkan tingkat risiko seluruh elemen kerja menjadi kategori II, sehingga berpotensi mengurangi risiko MSDs, meningkatkan kenyamanan, dan mendukung peningkatan produktivitas.
