Abstract

The phenomenon of shifting life orientations among Generation Z in Indonesia shows a significant pattern in which acute anxiety about poverty (financial anxiety) now far exceeds concerns about single status. In the digital space, narratives about financial freedom and the economic burden of marriage dominate discourse, creating a collective perception that marriage is a material “luxury” that threatens individual freedom. This study aims to dissect the sociological roots of this paradigm shift and reconstruct the concept of the Sakinah family that is relevant in the contemporary context. This study uses a mixed methods approach, adopting a phenomenological design to deeply explore the essence of Millennials' life experiences and subjective awareness of the institution of marriage. This study involved 101 questionnaire respondents consisting of 95 Generation Z representatives and 6 Millennials, to map perception trends, where 91 respondents were unmarried and 10 respondents were married.  Then, it was supplemented with in-depth interview results from 5 informants based on the criteria of being married and having children in West Sumatra Province. The most important finding revealed that respondents were more afraid of facing poverty than of getting married late, which was triggered not only by flexing culture, but also by emotional trauma caused by narratives of failed marriages on social media that gave rise to the symbol Marriage is Scary.
