Abstract

This article examines the effectiveness of the extensive reading approach in improving the reading comprehension skills of eighth-grade students at MTs Muhammadiyah Padaelo. The study was conducted in response to students’ recurring difficulties in understanding English texts and the need for more effective reading instruction. The objective of this research was to determine whether extensive reading could significantly enhance students’ comprehension abilities. Employing a quantitative pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest model, the study involved 20 students who participated in a series of extensive reading activities. Data were collected through reading comprehension tests administered before and after the intervention. The findings indicate a substantial increase in students’ comprehension scores, demonstrating that extensive reading provides meaningful exposure to accessible texts, promotes reading fluency, and enhances overall comprehension. The discussion highlights how the results align with theories of comprehensible input and previous studies supporting extensive reading as an effective instructional strategy. The study concludes that extensive reading is a valuable approach for improving reading comprehension and suggests its integration into English language teaching practices, while also noting areas for future research.
