Abstract

Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) are a group of beneficial bacteria that aggressively colonize the rhizosphere (the thin soil layer, 1–2 mm thick, surrounding the root zone). PGPR activity benefits plant growth by facilitating the uptake of various soil nutrients, synthesizing and modulating the concentrations of growth-promoting phytohormones, and suppressing pathogen activity through the production of compounds or metabolites such as antibiotics and siderophores. Applying PGPR as a biofertilizer offers an alternative fertilization method that enriches and improves soil health while reducing environmental pollution caused by the excessive use of inorganic fertilizers. This initiative focuses on bamboo plants; bamboo roots can be transformed into organic fertilizer through a series of fermentation processes. Consequently, this community service project aims to introduce organic fertilizer to the public—specifically the residents of Oebufu Urban Village—by utilizing bamboo roots and root-associated bacteria (rhizobacteria) to produce an eco-friendly liquid organic fertilizer: PGPR. The project is conducted in two main stages: outreach/education and training. It is expected that, as a result of this initiative, the community partners will enhance their skills in producing PGPR for both personal and commercial use.
