Abstract

This study investigated the relationship between air humidity, light intensity, and bryophyte diversity around Coban Putri Waterfall, Batu City, East Java, Indonesia. Sampling was conducted using fifteen purposively placed 20 × 20 cm quadrats distributed among four distance classes from the waterfall (0–10, 10–20, 20–30, and 30–50 m). Bryophyte diversity was evaluated using the Shannon–Wiener diversity index (H′), while air humidity (% RH) and light intensity (lux) were measured using a hygrometer and a light meter, respectively. Three bryophyte morphotypes were recorded: creeping leafy moss, tufted leafy moss, and thalloid liverwort. Air humidity ranged from 30.4 to 31.6% RH, whereas light intensity increased from 20 to 75 lux across the distance gradient. The Shannon–Wiener diversity index ranged from 0.691 to 0.747, indicating low bryophyte diversity throughout the study area. Pearson correlation analysis indicated a weak negative correlation between air humidity and bryophyte diversity (r = −0.388, p = 0.612) and a moderate positive correlation between light intensity and bryophyte diversity (r = 0.538, p = 0.462). However, neither relationship was statistically significant (p > 0.05). The low diversity values were associated with the dominance of creeping leafy moss and tufted leafy moss across all observation sites. These findings indicate that, under the observed environmental conditions, air humidity and light intensity were not significantly associated with bryophyte diversity around Coban Putri Waterfall.
