Abstract

Maternal knowledge of nutrition and family planning plays an important role in promoting the health and well-being of both mothers and children. Limited understanding of balanced nutrition, stunting prevention, complementary feeding, and contraceptive options may affect mothers’ ability to make appropriate decisions regarding family health. This community service program aimed to improve mothers’ knowledge of nutrition and family planning as an effort to support maternal and child health. The activity was conducted through interactive health education, group discussions, question-and-answer sessions, and knowledge evaluation using pre-test and post-test assessments involving 23 mothers with young children. The findings indicated an improvement in participants’ knowledge following the educational intervention. Prior to the activity, most participants had a low level of knowledge, comprising 13 participants (56.6%), while only 3 participants (13.0%) demonstrated a good level of knowledge. Following the intervention, the proportion of participants with good knowledge increased to 20 (87.0%), with no participants remaining in the low-knowledge category. The mean knowledge score increased from 43.8 to 87.4, representing an improvement of 43.6 points. These findings indicate that health education can serve as an approach to strengthening mothers’ understanding of nutrition and family planning. Program sustainability may be supported by integrating regular nutrition and family planning education into Posyandu activities.
