Abstract

Occupational accidents remain a serious problem in the oil palm plantation sector, particularly among harvesters who face various hazards during harvesting activities. This study aimed to analyze the causes of occupational accidents among oil palm harvesters in Simangambat Village, Simangambat District, North Padang Lawas Regency. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach involving 9 informants, consisting of 6 oil palm harvesters and 3 plantation owners. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, and analyzed based on Heinrich’s Domino Theory. The findings showed that occupational accidents were influenced by social and organizational factors, including inadequate OSH implementation, limited safety training, and insufficient work supervision. Human factors included fatigue, lack of concentration, and working in a hurry. Unsafe acts included incomplete use of personal protective equipment and noncompliance with safety procedures, while unsafe conditions included slippery roads, uneven ground, scattered oil palm fronds, and animal disturbances. The accidents experienced included injuries from falling fresh fruit bunches, work tools, and slipping. These findings indicate the need to strengthen OSH implementation, improve PPE compliance, provide safety training, and enhance work supervision to prevent occupational accidents.
