Abstract

Mangrove ecosystems have considerable potential as natural phytoremediation agents for treating shrimp aquaculture wastewater, yet their effectiveness in narrow buffer zones located close to pond outlets remains poorly understood. This study addresses that gap by integrating water quality assessment, phytoremediation efficiency, and nutrient bioaccumulation mechanisms of two dominant mangrove species Lumnitzera racemosa and Avicennia marina within a single, spatially confined coastal transition zone in Legung Village, Sumenep Regency. A natural experimental approach was used, comparing water quality and plant nutrient content across four zones along the wastewater flow path. The mangrove zone reduced phosphate concentrations very effectively (>97%) but was markedly less effective for ammonia (14.88%), while the two species showed contrasting nutrient-partitioning strategies: root retention in Lumnitzera Racemosa versus active stem translocation in Avicennia marina. These findings provide practical guidance for designing species-based, tiered mangrove buffer zones as a nature-based approach to managing shrimp pond wastewater in narrow coastal transition areas.
