Abstract

Air Blast Freezer (ABF) reliability is critical for maintaining seafood product quality and production continuity. This study identifies recurring ABF failures, examines their probable causes, describes corrective-maintenance actions, and evaluates reported downtime changes. A descriptive case study was conducted on four ABF units at a seafood-processing plant in Probolinggo, Indonesia. Data were obtained through direct observation, interviews with maintenance personnel, and maintenance records from January–February 2026. Twenty-two failure events were classified into six categories. Discharge-pipe leakage was the most frequent failure, with 11 events (50.0%), followed by low lubrication or low oil pressure with six events (27.3%) and ice blockage with two events (9.1%). Bearing damage, subcooler expansion failure, and connecting-rod breakage each occurred once but caused more severe operational disruption. Probable causes included vibration, inadequate welding, possible corrosion, insufficient lubrication, ineffective defrosting, excessive operating loads, and component wear. Corrective actions included welding, refrigerant refilling, oil and filter servicing, evaporator cleaning, component replacement, and compressor overhaul. Reported average downtime decreased across all failure categories, with absolute reductions of 1–12 hours. However, recurring failures indicate that maintenance remains predominantly reactive, requiring scheduled inspections, condition monitoring, critical spare-parts planning, and structured documentation.
