Abstract

The electric motorcycle conversion program in Indonesia is currently facing the challenge of low user adoption. One of the contributing factors is the design of the upper control panel, which does not adequately consider ergonomic aspects and variations in users’ anthropometric characteristics. The main issues include users’ difficulty in reaching functional control buttons and an information interface that is not sufficiently intuitive, leading to cognitive confusion. This study aims to optimize the design of the upper control button panel for a converted Yamaha Xeon 125 motorcycle by applying a design thinking approach based on ergonomic analysis. The design process followed the Double Diamond model, consisting of the empathize, define, Ideate, prototype, and test stages. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and a literature review, which were then synthesized to identify the primary design focus. Solution development employed the SCAMPER method, followed by the creation of a 3D model that was evaluated through simulation software and a physical prototype produced using 3D printing. The testing results showed that the maximum thumb deviation angle required to operate the control buttons was only 8.05°, which was considered ergonomically acceptable because it utilized approximately 53% of the normal physiological range of motion. The proposed design successfully improved users’ physical comfort and reduced cognitive confusion, while also demonstrating the potential to enhance riding safety and increase public acceptance of converted electric motorcycles.
