Abstract

This study is motivated by the increasing ecological crisis, which reflects an imbalance in the relationship between humans and the environment. At the same time, piety in religious life is often understood primarily as an individual and ritual practice, resulting in limited ecological awareness. This study aims to analyze the concept of individual piety in Islam, identify the factors contributing to its limited ecological implications, and reconstruct the concept of ecological piety based on the thought of Seyyed Hossein Nasr. This research employs a qualitative approach using a library research method. Data were collected through documentary analysis of Seyyed Hossein Nasr’s works, classical and contemporary literature, and relevant scholarly journals, and were analyzed using descriptive-analytical and interpretive methods. The findings reveal that piety in Islam is inherently holistic, encompassing the relationship between humans and Allah, fellow human beings, and the natural world. However, ritual-oriented religious paradigms and anthropocentric perspectives have weakened its ecological dimension. Drawing on Nasr’s thought, this study reconstructs the concept of ecological piety based on the principles of tawhid, the sacredness of nature, the trusteeship (khilāfah) of humanity, and environmental ethics. Ecological piety is therefore understood as a form of spiritual consciousness that encourages human responsibility for preserving environmental sustainability as an act of devotion to Allah.
