Abstract

The conflict between Shia and Sunni Islam has deep historical roots, originating from the succession dispute following the death of Prophet Muhammad. The events at Saqifah and the contested role of Ali ibn Abi Talib marked the beginning of political divergence that eventually evolved into theological conflict, particularly through the Shia doctrine of Imamah, which stands in contrast to the Sunni concept of the caliphate. Over time, these differences solidified into distinct sectarian identities and have contributed to ongoing tensions, especially in the geopolitical sphere after the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran. Contemporary crises in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen illustrate how sectarian sentiments are often exploited for political purposes. Nevertheless, various reconciliation efforts have emerged, including the Amman Message and other inter-sectarian dialogues. This article aims to trace the historical origins of the Shia–Sunni conflict, analyze its contemporary geopolitical implications, and evaluate the challenges and prospects for peaceful coexistence within the Muslim world.

Abstract

Abstract

The death of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) gave rise to political and theological dynamics within the Muslim community. The conflicts during the period of the Rightly Guided Caliphs, particularly following the arbitration (tahkim) between Ali ibn Abi Talib and Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan, resulted not only in political fragmentation but also in the emergence of various theological schools in Islam. This study aims to examine the historical background and main doctrines of the Khawarij, Murji’ah, Jabariyah, and Qadariyah, especially concerning issues of faith, major sins, and divine decree (qada and qadar). This research employs a qualitative-descriptive method with a library research approach by analyzing relevant books, journals, and scholarly articles. The findings indicate that the Khawarij and Murji’ah emerged as responses to political conflict, while the Jabariyah and Qadariyah developed due to differing interpretations of human will and freedom within God’s decree.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the increasing ecological crisis, which reflects an imbalance in the relationship between humans and the environment. At the same time, piety in religious life is often understood primarily as an individual and ritual practice, resulting in limited ecological awareness. This study aims to analyze the concept of individual piety in Islam, identify the factors contributing to its limited ecological implications, and reconstruct the concept of ecological piety based on the thought of Seyyed Hossein Nasr. This research employs a qualitative approach using a library research method. Data were collected through documentary analysis of Seyyed Hossein Nasr’s works, classical and contemporary literature, and relevant scholarly journals, and were analyzed using descriptive-analytical and interpretive methods. The findings reveal that piety in Islam is inherently holistic, encompassing the relationship between humans and Allah, fellow human beings, and the natural world. However, ritual-oriented religious paradigms and anthropocentric perspectives have weakened its ecological dimension. Drawing on Nasr’s thought, this study reconstructs the concept of ecological piety based on the principles of tawhid, the sacredness of nature, the trusteeship (khilāfah) of humanity, and environmental ethics. Ecological piety is therefore understood as a form of spiritual consciousness that encourages human responsibility for preserving environmental sustainability as an act of devotion to Allah.
