Abstract

The use of safety equipment in the railway sector is crucial, particularly when navigation system failures occur. One such aid used when a train fails to stop is the buffer stop. Friction buffer stops are a type of buffer stop that can absorb large amounts of kinetic energy, enabling efficient and safe deceleration. Although it has been widely implemented in railway systems, few studies have evaluated its energy absorption capability and deceleration characteristics specifically on railway test tracks. This study aims to evaluate the absorption of kinetic energy by the buffer stop during train collisions and ensure the deceleration rate meets the standard of ≤ 2.5 m/s². This study used an analytical calculation method based on friction buffer stop design equations, ISO 898-1 bolt standards, and kinetic energy-deceleration analysis. The results of the study show the relationship between kinetic energy, deceleration rate, and braking distance, as well as the influence of bolt size and material grade on the friction force in the braking jaws. The deceleration rate meets the requirements; the braking distance is ≤ 11 meters, and the kinetic energy is well absorbed by the buffer stops.
