Abstract

The purchase of gold on credit is a muamalah transaction that has generated differences of opinion among scholars regarding gold as a ribawi commodity and the application of ats-tsamaniyyah. This study aims to analyze the views of Shaykh Wahbah az-Zuhaili and Ibn Taymiyyah concerning purchasing gold on credit and the istinbath methods used. This research uses library research with a comparative approach. Primary data were obtained from the works of both scholars, while secondary data were derived from the Qur'an, hadith, fatwas, books, and relevant journals. Data were analyzed using comparative analysis and tarjih. The findings indicate that Wahbah az-Zuhaili prohibits purchasing gold on credit because gold remains a ribawi commodity subject to taqabudh. In contrast, Ibn Taymiyyah permits it when gold functions as a commodity or asset rather than a medium of exchange. This difference stems from their understanding of the 'illah of riba and the changing function of gold.
