Abstract

The red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst.) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), is a secondary pest that commonly attacks products in storage warehouses. Plant-based insecticides derived from local knowledge, such as those used by the Dayak tribe. The use of Shorea macrophylla by the Dayak tribe offers an environmentally friendly approach to pest control. This study was conducted to evaluate the insect repellent activity of the fumigant extract of S. macrophylla with ethyl acetate solvent against T. castaneum. This study consisted of five treatment concentrations, the treatment concentrations used were 30 μL, 60 μL, 90 μL, 120 μL, and 150 μL. Observations were made at six different times, ranging from 60 to 360 minutes. Each treatment was repeated five times and arranged with a Randomized Block Design. The repellent test was carried out using a Y-Tube olfactometer. The results showed that the repellent index increased with increasing concentration and exposure time. After 360 minutes of exposure, the lowest repellent index was 9.4% at a concentration of 30 μL, while the highest percentage was 65.8% at a concentration of 150 μL. This study shows the potential of S. macrophylla extract with ethyl acetate solvent as a botanical pest repellent that is quite effective in repelling T. castaneum.
