Abstract

Managing nurses’ working hours is an important component of nursing human resource management, particularly in the High Care Unit (HCU), where continuity of care must be maintained for 24 hours a day. This study aimed to analyze the proportion of excess work hours between Primary Nurses and Associate Nurses in the HCU and to examine the differences between the two groups. The study employed a comparative analytic design with a cross-sectional approach based on roster audit in a general hospital located in Cirebon City. The study population consisted of all nurses listed in the HCU duty roster for one month, totaling 24 nurses, all of whom were included using a total sampling technique. Data were collected through a review of the monthly duty roster, after which total work hours were calculated and classified into appropriate and excess categories based on the predetermined work-hour threshold. Respondents were then grouped into Primary Nurses and Associate Nurses. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test. The results showed that the proportion of excess work hours was more dominant among Associate Nurses than Primary Nurses, with a significance value of 0.003.
